Positive form

Used to + infinitive

Пример:

I used toplay in the garden in my childhood.

Question form: в вопросительной форме перед подлежащим ставится вспомогательный глагол did. К глаголу use окончание -ed не добавляется.

Did … use to + infinitive?

Пример:

Did you use toplay in the garden in your childhood?

Negative form: в отрицательной форме после подлежащего ставится вспомогательный глагол did и отрицательная частица not. К глаголу use окончание -ed не добавляется.

Didn’t use to + infinitive

Пример:

I didn’t use toplay in the garden in my childhood.

Примеры использования конструкции used to

Конструкция used to выражает регулярныесостояния/ситуации и привычки/действияв прошлом (refers to past habits and states). Этот оборот используется для описания событий, которые регулярно происходили в прошлом, а потом прекратились – либо на время, либо навсегда. Также used to используется при описании состояний, которые имели место в прошлом, а потом изменились (We use it for something that happened regularly in the past or for something that was true but no longer is).

Пример:

I used to go to the south with my parents when I was a child. – Когда я был ребенком, мы ездили с родителями на юг.

She used to be afraid of dogs when she was a child. – Когда она была ребенком, она боялась собак.

He used to have curly hair when he was a child. – В детстве у него были кудрявые волосы.

One hundred years ago schools were very different. Children didn’t wear their everyday clothes to school. They learned to read, write and do mathematics. They had History and Geography but they didn’t learn Science. They used to write on slates with chalks. When the children finished their work, they cleaned their slates with a rag so that they could write on them again and again. When they were older, children learned to write with pens and ink. They didn’t have many books as they were very expensive. They didn’t do sports at school like baseball or volleyball or football or table tennis.
