Today we are going to find a place to live. Let’s look at the offers. Here is the site I am looking on (см. рис. 1).

I want to rent a flat or a house, so let's click on “flats to rent” (см. рис. 2).

• one-bedroom flats — квартиры с одной спальней

• two-bedroom flats — квартиры с двумя спальнями

• three-bedroom flats — квартиры с тремя спальнями

OK, this one looks good (см. рис. 3).

Ok, why don't we have a look at houses to rent then? Here is one (см. рис. 5).

Two bedrooms, an open plan kitchen, a garage for two cars, a small garden, quiet neighbourhood.

Две спальни, кухня открытого плана, гараж на две машины, небольшой сад, тихий район.

Location: in the suburbs, an hour-ride from the city center.

Расположение: в пригороде, в часе езды от центра города.

The house looks nice but I will have to drive two hours to and from work every day. It doesn't suit me.

Let's look at this house (см. рис. 6).

Location: a 15-minute ride from the city center.

A fully furnished cozy house with everything you might need just on 20 square metres.

Oh, it is a tiny house. The main idea of tiny houses is to live simpler and not to waste space for a big house with many rooms most of which you don't use regularly. Tiny houses are good for ecology and they aren't expensive.

Это же крошечный дом. Идея в том, чтобы жить проще и не занимать лишнее место большим домом с комнатами, которыми вы не пользуетесь на постоянной основе. Крошечные дома экологичны и недороги.

I like the idea of tiny houses but since I have a family and a big dog, I don't think it will be comfortable for four of us.

While we are waiting for the reply, let's have a look at some more vocabulary.

• a cottage — одноэтажный дом

• an open plan kitchen — кухня открытой планировки

Good news, guys, I am about to move to a new house! But first I have to refurbish it. I will start with the kitchen. It is not in a very good state.

I want to tile the floor and paint the walls.

Can you help me choose the color (см. рис. 8)?

Next I want to wallpaper one of the bedrooms. And paint the ceiling.

And hang a mirror and a shelf in the bathroom.

Let's see what vocabulary we used to speak about refurbishment.

• to tile the floor — класть плитку на пол

• to paint the walls / the ceiling — красить стены / потолок

• to wallpaper (a room) — клеить обои (в комнате)

• a bath — ванна

• a shower cabin — душевая кабинка

• to hang a mirror / a shelf — вешать зеркало / полку

That's it. The refurbishment has finished.

There are a few things left to be done and we can move in.

The place is a mess!

Everything is covered in dust and dirt, so I have a lot of cleaning to do.

But where should I start?

I think I will first dust the furniture. I have my multi-coloured dust brush for that.

What's next? Mop the floor. Here is a bucket of clean water and a mop.

I will start with washing the dishes. I don't have a dishwasher, so I will have to do it myself.

I have to unpack the boxes first.

There are clothes and bed linen. They are wrinkled, so let's first iron them.

And now I will hang the clothes in the wardrobe and make the beds.

Now, let's revise some vocabulary to speak about household chores.

• а mess — беспорядок

• The place is a mess! — Здесь полнейший беспорядок!

• a dust brush — щётка для пыли

• to dust the furniture — вытирать пыль с мебели

• a bucket of water — ведро с водой

• a mop — швабра

• to mop the floor — мыть пол шваброй

• to wash the window — мыть окно

• to iron — утюжить

• a dishwasher — посудомоечная машина

• rubber gloves — резиновые перчатки

• a sponge — губка

• washing-up liquid — средство для мытья посуды

• to wash the dishes — мыть посуду

• to make the bed — заправлять кровать

How often do you do your house chores?

I usually mop the floor once a week.

Обычно я мою пол раз в неделю.

I wash the dishes 3 times a day.

Я мою посуду 3 раза в день.

I dust the furniture every 3–4 days.

Я протираю пыль с мебели раз в 3–4 дня.

And I wash the windows every 6 months.

И я мою окна раз в полгода.

Remember that in such phrases if the period of time is singular (a week, a day, a year and so on) we do not use any prepositions but use the article a. But if the period of time is plural, we use the phrase with every.

Запомните: если в таких фразах период времени — слово в единственном числе (неделя, день, год и так далее), то мы не используем предлоги, но используем артикль a. Но если период времени во множественном числе, мы используем фразу со словом every — «каждый».

If you see such words as “one-bedroom” or “two-bedroom” in an advertisement, usually it means that the flat or apartment consists of one or two separate bedrooms and some other rooms. Обратите внимание, что в англоязычных странах при описании квартиры зачастую учитывается количество только отдельных спален. Поэтому, когда вы видите в объявлении слова “one-bedroom” или “two-bedroom”, они могут обозначать, что в квартире одна или две спальни, но также есть другие комнаты, которые в это количество не входят.

A typical one-bedroom flat usually has:

• a living-room or a lounge;

• a kitchen;

• a bedroom.

В русском понимании такая квартира является двухкомнатной, поэтому, несмотря на числительное “one” в слове “one-bedroom”, переводом будет служить прилагательное «двухкомнатная». “Two-bedroom”, в свою очередь, будет означать трёхкомнатную квартиру, однако варианты «однокомнатная» и «двухкомнатная» для указанных слов также возможны.

«Конструкция “число + существительное”»

You have probably noticed that sometimes numbers are used together with nouns. But why are the nouns that go right after the numbers singular? Two-bedroom, seven-storey.

Вы, наверное, замечали, что иногда существительные используются с числительными. Двухкомнатная, семиэтажный. Но почему существительные, идущие за числами, в единственном числе?

That's because the number+noun phrases work here as adjectives and describe other nouns — “flat” in “a two-bedroom flat” and “block of flats” in “a seven-storey block of flats”. Adjectives in English do not take a plural form. Also, remember to use hyphen between the number and the noun in such phrases.

Это потому, что фразы «число + существительное» выступают здесь в роли прилагательных и описывают другие существительные — слова «квартира» и «многоквартирный дом». Прилагательные в английском языке не имеют формы множественного числа. Также не забывайте использовать дефис между числом и существительным в таких фразах.

There are many other types of housing. Let's look at some.

• a detached house — частный дом
  Usually it is a house for one family. Обычно это дом на одну семью.

• a terraced house — блокированная застройка
  This kind of house is quite popular in Great Britain. Такой тип домов достаточно популярен в Великобритании. Several houses are attached to each other which helps save space. Несколько домов стоят вплотную друг к другу, что позволяет сэкономить место.

• a bungalow — бунгало
  This is a small one-storey house. Это небольшой одноэтажный дом.

• a cabin — хижина
  Such houses can be found somewhere in the woods and serve as temporary accommodation for fishermen and hunters. Такие дома, как правило, строят где-то в лесах, и они служат временным жилищем для рыбаков и охотников.

• a farmhouse — фермерский дом
  This is a house farmers live in. Это дом, в котором живут фермеры.

• a villa — вилла
  That is usually a big luxurious house somewhere at the sea. Как правило, это большой роскошный дом у моря.

1. Write a description of your home using the words and phrases we discussed today. Here is a sample answer.
   I live in a three-bedroom flat with my family. Our flat is on the second floor of a ten-storey block of flats. It is a 30-minute ride from the city center. There is a small kitchen in the flat and a spacious living-room. The only problem is that the neighbourhood is quite noisy — there is a road near the building and a lot of shops.

2. Now you can tell about how often you do different house chores using the phrases from the lesson. Write five sentences telling what you usually do.
