Эти глаголы – can, could и may.
May
You may take the keys. (NOT: You may to take the keys).
May I go? (NOT: Do I may go?)
He may come in. (NOT: He mays come in.)
A: Mr. Smith, may I go to the restroom?
B: You may go as soon as you have finished your exam.
Глагол may может заменяться глаголом to do:
A: May I open the window?
B: Please, do.
A: May I come in?
B: Sorry, you can’t. (I’m sorry, you may not.)
I'm afraid, it's not possible.
Ann is struggling to open the jar. Her friend John comes up and wants to help.
John: I see you need some help here. May I?
Ann: Oh, thanks, John. Here (handles him the jar.)
You may leave the table now that you’re finished with your dinner.
You may borrow my car when you come.
Вместо него употребляется уже знакомая нам конструкция to be allowed to:
He was allowed to stay here.
We were allowed to use dictionaries.
I was allowed to go home because I was sick.
Might
I wonder if I might work a bit earlier today? or Might I leave work a bit earlier today?
I remember many times as a child asking my father:
Can I have an ice cream?
Can I watch television?
Can I get down from the table? etc.
Each time I was happy to hear the answer:
Yes, you can!
…only to be stopped short the next second by the continuation:
…but you may not!
Choose the correct answer below to fill the gap:
1. _____ sit here, please?
a) Do I may
b) May
2. _____ come with us?
a) May he
b) He may
3. You _____ leave now if you wish.
a) may not
b) may
4. A: May I make a call on your mobile?
B: Please, _____.
a) may
b) do
5. I ______ use public transport when I was little.
a) may
b) was allowed to
Ответы: 1)b 2)a 3)b 4)b 5)b
Could I borrow your pencil?
Could I use your phone?
Could I stay here till Wednesday?
Yes, you could or No, you couldn't,
- Yes, of course.
- Certainly.
- Yes, you can.
- Sorry, you can’t.
- I’m afraid it’s not possible.
- Well, I’m not sure.
Could I bring my friend to the party?
Could my friend come with me to the party?
1. I'm extremely sorry, but could I return the money that I owe you after the holiday?
2. I’m extremely sorry, but couldn’t I return the money that I owe you after the holiday?
Так же в формальной речи распространена конструкция do you think I could…:
Do you think I could borrow your bike?
Do you think I could use your pen?
Can I wear shorts to the party?
(on the phone): Hello, can I speak to Tom, please?
Can I have some more cake?
Can I go now?
A: Can I smoke in this room?
B: You can’t smoke here, but you can smoke in the garden.
You can wear my jacket.
Max can stay at his friend’s house tonight.
You can go home.
A: Can I go to the cinema with my friends, Dad?
B: No, you can’t.
A: Can I ask you something very personal?
B: I’m afraid, you can’t.
Present
I can drive Susan’s car when she’s out of town.
Past
I was allowed to drive Susan’s car while she was out of town last week.
NOT: I could drive Susan’s car.
We were allowed to take his car.
They weren’t allowed to stay there.
She wasn’t allowed to go there alone.
Эти глаголы: may, could и can (см.
May (formal style)
- Mrs. Brown, may I stay at your house till Wednesday?
- Yes, you may.
- No, you may not. / I’m afraid, it’s not possible.
- May I go to the toilet, sir?
- It’s only ten minutes to go, you’ll have to wait.
Could (less formal but still very polite)
- Could I stay here till Wednesday?
- Yes, of course. / Certainly. / Yes, you can.
- I’m afraid, it’s not possible. / Sorry, you can’t.
- Could I take a look at your notes?
- Yeah, sure.
Can (informal)
- Can I stay here till Wednesday?
- Sure.
- Can I borrow your pen for a moment?
- Sorry, I need it. Is the pencil OK?
You can/may use the phone.
NOT: You could use the phone.
A: Could I ask you something?
B: Yes, you can. / No, you can’t.
NOT: Yes, you could. / No, you couldn’t.
Существует еще одна конструкция, которая широко используется для того, чтобы спрашивать разрешения, – would you mind + if I + simple past.
A: Would you mind if I opened the window?
B: Of course not. / Not at all. / No, I wouldn’t mind.
A: Would you mind if I smoked?
B: I’d rather you didn’t. I’m allergic to smoke.
A: Would you mind if I didn’t come to the meeting? I don’t feel very well.
B: No, I wouldn’t mind. / No, that would be all right.
В разговорном английском мы можем заменить структуру would you mind на do you mind.
Do you mind if I open the window?
NOT: Do you mind if I opened the window?
Do you mind if I don’t go to the party with you?
NOT: Do you mind if I didn’t go to the party with you?
Would it be OK / all right if.
Would it be OK if I returned your book tomorrow?
Would it be all right if I didn’t go to the party with you?
Use one of the modal verbs in brackets to fill the gaps
1. I’m sorry but you (can’t / may) ______ use the computer until after I’ve finished.
2. Students (may / could) ______ study in the library from five to nine in the evening.
3. A: Could I use your cell phone, please?
B: Sorry, you (can’t / couldn’t)______.
4. A: Could I stand here for a while?
B: Yes, you (can / may)______.
5. Would you mind if I (don’t/ didn’t)______ come to your party?
6. (Do you mind / May)______I take the day off tomorrow?
1) can’t; 2) may; 3) can’t; 4) can; 5) didn’t; 6) May.
